The Art of Troy Gua

ABOUT

Troy Gua was born and raised in Seattle. He grew up with Ronald McDonald and Ronald Reagan, King Tut and the King of Pop; images and icons that have been burned into his subconscious. Media culture has shaped his life, and is a vital component of his creative process.

STATEMENT
I produce Pop-infused conceptual work in a wide range of media, marrying commerciality to contemporary with a glossy design aesthetic and a keen wit. My subject matter addresses contemporary culture and the ways in which media, iconography, identity, cultural self-critique, and the universal human need for recognition play parts within it.

My methods of fabrication are as eclectic as the results, and my media of choice is whatever best serves the piece, whether it be paint, print, plaster, photography, cast resin, found object, sculptural intervention, video, etc.

Encouraging closer investigation, my work is reflective, often both literally and metaphorically. It implies the reflection of our culture and my love/hate fascination with it. It suggests the slickly wrapped bits of information our society is continuously fed through our ever-growing assemblage of media. It references what we choose to see, and what we choose to show.

I'm both drawn to and repelled by our contemporary culture. That ambiguity is reflected in the work I make. Is it exalting or condemning its subject matter? Can it do both simultaneously?

Born and raised in Seattle, Troy Gua is passionately creative: a self-taught artist, designer, maker, and tinkerer, continuously cultivating a prolific output of smart, bold work in a diverse range of media, produced with wit and a crisp visual aesthetic.

STATEMENT: My process, rooted in meticulous craftsmanship, often combines various mediums like sculpture, photography, and digital manipulation. The idea comes first, the media I choose is what I feel best serves the idea, and the methods of fabrication are as wide in scope as the results. I also strive for a diverse artistic approach, and I passionately experiment with materials and techniques, embracing an evolving fluidity that allows for unexpected shifts in my artistic practice, but is always flavored with my own special blend of pop culture and contemporary art.

Unconventional portraiture is the vehicle I often choose to convey my investigations of multiplicity and the fluidity of identity: the true essence and core of my work. The malleability of our existence and our limitless potential for plasticity fascinates me, and to mirror this human experience, I have created a vast body of work via multiple forms of non-traditional portraiture.

I want my art to invite viewers to take a closer look, below the surface, into themselves and outside to others, with empathy and understanding rather than judgment. I am not one thing. None of us are. As a young man, I was judged, bullied, and the victim of violence because of how I chose to dress and present myself. These experiences were transformative, leaving me driven and inspired to challenge perception and to foster curiosity and alternative perspectives, encouraging connection. ~TG
